Ghett'a Life

1. Who was your favorite character (s) from the film? Why?

My favorite character was definetely Derrick, because he was very aware and critical about the whole situation that was going on in Jamaica and never fell into the trap of hating and becoming part of that cycle of violence and corruption. He stilled believing in his dreams and fought for them as well and even defended at some instances the ones who hurt him. He represented a very different kind of  a Jamaican citizen. a humanized young man who represents a light of freedom and unity in a violent and cruel environment. He represents the counterpart of the world in which he was born (Although he was still part of it and also putted his family in very huge troubles, besides his wishes to unite the fragmented society).

2. How do we see the political conflict portrayed in the film? Remember to use the article Michael Manley's Vision to help you.

It is very clear the presented violence between Jamaicans on streets (where Derrick story goes on) and his struggles of being part of a political adversary gym of his neighborhood. The gangsters who controlled these political zones and were submerged in this corrupted system saw these Derrick actions as a betrayal (because they were from the same Kingston political 'zone') complicating things for his family and increasing the fighting gangs between political parties (who also had organized civilian militias and incentivated a kind of civil war in Kingston).  All of these just to ensure votes and power to politics and their gangsters. A very difficult moment for Jamaica because of the People's National Party and Jamaican Labour Party. They in fact fought for political and civilian power on street wars in Kingston on the 70's, and the film captures it very well.

3. How are woman portrayed in this film? Is it a little or big advancement compared to The Harder They Come?

Women are much more present for me in this film. Not only because there's more than one and actually they participate on the trama of the story, but in many times they showed very more complex character developments. sadly very attached to male characters as well and could have been much more independent and powerful and actually had add some drama to the storylines in the film. I still feel the female role has to be much more explored in Jamaican film culture, they always left something on the story that makes me become more interested and the film and could been exploited on the trama (just saying). There's much more work to do yet, but Dawn Thompson relieved me a lot since she had a very stong personality and actually acting by her inner feelings and thoughts.
